Over 90,000 trees planted in Madagascar by CIEL Textile teams | Ciel Textile Website
Madagascar is one the world's prime biodiversity hotspots and over 90% of its wildlife are endemic. Unfortunately, over the past 20 years, 29% of the country's forests have disappeared. Researchers predict that 38-93% of the forests present in 2000 could disappear by 2050. At CIEL Textile, we're passionate about creating a brighter, greener tomorrow! In Madagascar, where our Aquarelle, Floreal, and Tropic companies operate, our teams embarked on an inspiring reforestation initiative: Around 500 of our colleagues teamed up to plant an impressive 93,280 trees!
Now, this isn't a one-time thing. Every year, from February to April, we're out there, sleeves rolled up, planting trees. We carefully select the plants that support the specific needs of the region, like Eucalyptus camaldulensis, which is great for valuable timber and fuelwood. Another variety, Eucalyptus citriodora, offers both ornamental and medicinal value.
Collaborating for a greener tomorrow
We didn't do this alone, though. CIEL Textile collaborates with local authorities, residents, and schools in places like Ambohibary Sambaina, Antsiakarana Faliarivo Masindray, and Andranomanelatra. So, this project benefits both the environment and the local communities. And together, we made a real difference: In February 2024, we covered some serious ground, planting over 20 hectares in the village of Ambolo in Madagascar, and a hectare each near the campuses of CEG and Lycee schools in Antanarivo, Madagascar.
Long-term sustainability: monitoring tree growth in Madagascar
But it doesn't stop there, we're sticking around for the long haul. We regularly check on those trees, checking in every quarter to make sure they're thriving.
Since we started this initiative in 2016, we have been working alongside locals to ensure the health and growth of the trees. And you know what? It's working. In 2022, we achieved a remarkable 66% success rate, recognized by the the Environmental & Sustainable Development Ministry.
So far, we're proud of what we've achieved and we're excited to continue this journey together, knowing that each small step brings us closer to building a sustainable future!
